TREE COMMISSION

CITY HALL, 100 LOCKVILLE ROAD

WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2005

 

REGULAR MEETING

5:30 P.M.

 

  1. ROLL CALL.  Ms. Hurley called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Mr. Malone, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Goodrich and Ms. Carter were present; Ms. Milnor was absent.  Others present:  Ed Drobina, Diana Fuller and several high school students.

 

2.   APPROVAL OF MINUTES of April 13, 2005, Regular Meeting.  Mr. Malone moved to approve; Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.  Mr. Malone, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Goodrich and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.

 

3.   COMMUNITY COMMENTS.  Ms. Hurley explained the purpose of the Tree Commission to the high school students and welcomed Ms. Carter as the newest Tree Commission Member.

 

      4.   REPORTS.   

A.                 Street Tree Report

Ms. Hurley stated that work was done at the arboretum.  Mr. Drobina stated that Gregg Ellis was the one doing the work.  Ms. Hurley stated that Mr. Ellis has been installing name tags for the trees, and planted the Arbor Day tree.  Ms. Hurley stated that Mr. Ellis has planted 93 street trees in the last month.

 

5.   SCHEDULED MATTERS.

A.        Tree Preservation Update

Mr. Malone stated that there is nothing new to report.

 

                  B.        Arboretum.

Mr. Drobina stated that he talked with Bernie Fleming of Keller Farms and he stated that they would start working at the end of the bridge within the next week or two.  Mr. Goodrich asked how long the work would take.  Mr. Drobina stated it would be two or three days.

 

Ms. Hurley asked if there had been any more vandalism at the arboretum.  Mr. Drobina stated that he had not heard of anything recently.  Mr. Drobina stated that he asked the Parks Dept. about putting a trash can down there and they stated they would do that. 

 

Alicia Briggs asked the Tree Commission for approval to do work down at the arboretum to achieve her Gold Award for Girl Scouts.  Ms. Briggs stated that she would like to build and place some bird houses down at the Arboretum.  She continued that she would also like to plant some flowers.   She continued that she would also weed the area and plant some butterfly bushes and azaleas. 

 

Ms. Hurley asked what a Gold Award is.  Alicia explained that it is the equivalent of an Eagle with the Boy Scouts.  She stated she has to fill out paper work and submit it by June to the Girl Scout Council.  She continued that late June or early July she will have the project completed.  She continued that she was going to ask Keller Farms to sponsor and support her with funds for the project.

 

Ms. Hurley asked that Alicia report back to the June Tree Commission meeting after the paperwork is submitted and approved.  Ms. Hurley stated that the commission would like to see the final plan on paper.

 

Mr. Malone made a motion to offer support for the proposal made tonight; Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.  Mr. Malone, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Goodrich and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.

 

                     C.     Arbor Day

Ms. Hurley thanked Venture Crew 88 for coming to the Arbor Day celebration and doing a flag presentation for us.

 

6.   COMMUNICATION

           A.   Tree Brochure

Ms. Hurley showed the tree brochure to the students and explained what information is provided in the brochure.

 

Ms. Carter stated that when she was working with the task force a question was brought up regarding the street trees in the tree brochure.  She continued that there was a question as to who was responsible for pruning the street trees, the homeowner or the city.  Mr. Drobina stated that Gregg Ellis prunes all the street trees.  Ms. Hurley stated that it specifically says in the tree brochure to contact the city if the trees need to be pruned.

 

Mr. Malone stated that the city’s arborist, Gregg Ellis, is responsible for many things, pruning is one of them, seeing that the trees get planted properly, doing inspections, coordinating in the new developments to make sure the trees get put in where they need to, etc.  Mr. Malone stated that if you have questions or need to know something that is not in the tree brochure, Mr. Ellis is more than happy to answer questions.

The tree brochure is on the website.

 

7.   OTHER BUSINESS

Mr. Malone thanked Tammy Drobina for the wonderful article in the newspaper about the Arbor Day celebration on April 29th.

 

Ms. Hurley stated that on July 28 there is a tree care conference and stated that they need to decide if they will be attending by the June Tree Commission meeting.

 


8.         ADJOURNMENT

            Their being nothing further, Mr. Malone moved to adjourn, Ms. Carter seconded the motion.  Mr. Malone, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Goodrich and Ms. Carter  voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:00 P.M. on May 11, 2005.
