REGULAR MEETING

7:30 P.M.

 

1.         ROLL CALL.  Mr. Campbell called the meeting to order at 7:35 P.M.  Roll call was taken with Mrs. Ball, Mrs. Hammond and Mr. Campbell present.  Mr. Frazier and Mr. Boetcher were absent.  Others present were:  Steve Carr, Lori Aberman and Anthony Schmitt. 

 

2.         APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF May 23, 2005, Regular Meeting.  Mrs. Ball moved to approve; Mr. Campbell seconded the motion.  Mrs. Hammond, Mrs. Ball and Mr. Campbell voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 3-0.

 

3.         COMMUNITY COMMENTS.   Mr. Schmitt of 224 Colony Park Drive made a brief presentation to the Board regarding Bike Paths.  He stated that he was very interested in what the City plans to do to increase the multi-use bike paths that run throughout the City.  Attachment 1 provides a brief outline of points Mr. Schmitt stressed to the Board.  Mr. Carr stated the City is currently working on a Parks Master Plan and this will be included in that plan.  He continued by inviting Mr. Schmitt to take part in the public meetings that will take place in the future regarding the Parks Master Plan.

 

4.         PARK DEVELOPMENT / IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

 

            A.        Parks Master Plan – Update.  Mr. Carr stated the City Manager is to review Edsall & Associates revised contract proposal (scope of services and fee) to prepare comprehensive parks and recreation facilities master plan.  Staff will make a contract recommendation to Safety Committee on August 1st.

 

            B.         Handicap Garden – Update.  Mr. Carr stated ODNR did not fund the project.  The Handicap Garden project will be included in the Park Master Plan.

 

            C.        Sycamore Park Tennis Court – Update.  Mr. Carr stated staff is reviewing construction specifications from Premiere Courts and a quote from Lannis Fence.   He continued the City plans to go out for bid in July and will have a contract recommendation to Safety Committee on August 1st.

 

            D.        Putting/Chipping Green – Update.  Mr. Carr stated the putting green has been installed.  He continued the turf area around the chipping green would be worked on late summer/early fall.

            E.         Joint Park District – Update.  Mr. Carr stated Violet Township has advertised for residents interesting in serving on a committee to study the viability of forming a joint park district with the City to submit a resume.  Mr. Carr stated homeowner associations have also been contacted.

 

5.         RECREATION AND EVENTS

 

Mr. Carr stated the annual Fourth of July Celebration is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 4, in Victory Park.  He continued that the parade would honor the memory of fallen Marine Corporal Dustin Derga.  The park will open at 4:30 pm, with the Parade starting at 6:00 pm. Opening Ceremonies will take place at 7:30 pm, the Parrot Head Band will take the stage at 8:00 pm and are scheduled to play until 11:00 pm.  The Band will take a break at 10:00 for the Fireworks Display and will play a final set from 10:30 until 11:00 pm.  Mr. Carr stated this is something new and hopefully it will help with the traffic congestion after the parade. 

 

Mr. Carr stated the City has partnered with the Columbus Children’s Theater to provide Summer Theater in the Park this summer.  The first performance will be Cinderella on Saturday, July 16.  The second performance will be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Saturday, August 13.  Mr. Carr stated both performances will take place at 7:30 pm in the Sycamore Park Amphitheater and are free to the public.

 

Mr. Carr stated the Fall Program Guide would be distributed via mail to all residents of the Pickerington School District on August 18th.

 

6.         OTHER BUSINESS.  Mr. Campbell inquired as to the status of the Disc Golf Course.  Mr. Carr stated the Disc Golf Course project is a part of the 12th round funding and the announcement will be made sometime in August.

 

7.         ADJOURNMENT.  There being nothing further, Mrs. Ball moved to adjourn; Mrs. Hammond seconded the motion.  Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Hammond voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 3-0.  The Parks and Recreation Board meeting adjourned at 8:10 P.M., June 27, 2005.
