5:30 P.M.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of November 9, 2005, Regular Meeting. Mr. Malone moved to approve; Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion. Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Hurley voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 3-0.
3. COMMUNITY COMMENTS. Ms. Hurley explained the purpose of the Tree Commission to the high school students.
4. REPORTS.
A. Street Tree Report
Mr. Malone explained to the high school students where and why the city plants trees in neighborhoods.
Mr. Malone asked which trees were being heeled in on Diley Road? Mr. Drobina stated that those were new trees being planted and that all the trees have been planted for the Fall planting with a total of 204 trees.
Ms. Hurley asked if the city was still picking up brush from last years storm. Mr. Drobina stated that the brush was mostly from people doing their own tree trimming.
Ms. Hurley stated that she and her neighbor were the recipients of trees from the planting and they both have deep ruts that were left in their yards. Mr. Drobina stated he would check into getting their yards fixed.
Mr. Goodrich stated that a tree on 256 by Violet Cemetery looks half dead and needs replaced if it is on city property.
5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
A. Tree Preservation Update
Mr. Malone stated that they still haven’t gotten anywhere in Village of Sycamore Creek. Mr. Malone stated work on Long Road looks like it is being protected. Mr. Malone stated that the one development furthest out on the north side of Long Road looks as though the property is being sold.
B. Arboretum.
Mr. Malone asked the students if they knew where the Arboretum is located or what its purpose is. Mr. Malone stated that the students should go down and take a look at it. He continued that for a number of years now both Arbor Day trees and a variety of other species have been planted at the Arboretum.
Ms. Hurley stated that she spoke with Allison Riggs about her Girl Scout project that was to be done at the Arboretum this Fall. Ms. Hurley stated that Allison still intended to work on her project although she would no long qualify for her Gold Award. Ms. Hurley stated that Allison said she would come back in the Spring and put up birdfeeders and bat houses.
One member of the audience asked why black strips were hanging off the trees at the Arboretum. Ms. Hurley stated that black bags are deer guards but she isn’t sure why the strips are hanging. Mr. Drobina stated he would check with the arborist and find out.
Ms. Hurley told the high school students to check on Pickerington’s website (pickerington.net) to find our tree brochure and more information about trees. Ms. Hurley asked if we could get a link to Ohio Department of Natural Resources from our website. Mr. Drobina stated he would check into it.
7. OTHER BUSINESS
Mr. Goodrich asked where we were on the budget. Mr. Drobina stated that the budget has been through 2 readings and is basically the same as last years budget.
Ms. Hurley stated that she would be having surgery in January and wouldn’t be able to attend for at least January’s meeting, maybe longer.
Mr. Drobina asked if there was any information the Tree Commission needed from the City that wasn’t being provided. Mr. Goodrich stated the only thing they would like is a copy of the proposed budget. Mr. Drobina stated that he would get copies of that for the next meeting.
8. ADJOURNMENT
Their being nothing further, Mr. Malone moved to adjourn, Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion. Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone and Ms. Hurley voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 3-0. The Tree Commission adjourned at 5:48 P.M. on December 14, 2005.
