TREE COMMISSION

CITY HALL, 100 LOCKVILLE ROAD

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2006

 

REGULAR MEETING

5:30 P.M.

 

  1. ROLL CALL.  Mr. Goodrich called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter were present.  Others present:  Ed Drobina, Gregg Ellis, Diana Fuller and three high school students.

 

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of February 8, 2006, Regular Meeting.  Mr. Malone moved to approve; Ms. Carter seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.

 

  1. COMMUNITY COMMENTS.  Mr. Goodrich explained the purpose of the Tree Commission to the high school students.

 

  1. REPORTS.   

A.                 Street Tree Report

Mr. Goodrich asked Mr. Ellis if he had a date set to start the spring tree planting.  Mr. Ellis stated the trees are ordered and planting should begin within the next couple of weeks.

 

     5.    SCHEDULED MATTERS.

                  A.        Tree Preservation Update

Mr. Malone stated that there have been no changes since the last report.

 

Mr. Malone asked Mr. Ellis if any new tree issues have come up.  Mr. Ellis stated he received two plans since the last meeting but there was nothing on the road so we don’t have any control.

 

      B.        Arboretum.

Mr. Drobina stated that someone vandalized the message board sign by breaking the plexiglass.  He continued that it was now repaired.

 

     6.    COMMUNICATION

 

Mr. Malone stated that Arbor Day is coming up on Friday, April 28.  Mr. Goodrich stated that the time would be 7:00 PM.  Mr. Ellis stated that he ordered a Horse Chestnut for the Arbor Day tree. Ms. Hurley stated that a sign announcing the Arbor Day presentation should be put in the message board at the Arboretum.  Mr. Drobina stated that we would talk with Molly about the Arbor Day Proclamation for the Mayor to sign.  Ms. Hurley stated that she would line up a Girl Scout or Boy Scout troop to attend.  Mr. Goodrich asked that information about Arbor Day be put on the website.  Mr. Drobina stated that information about Arbor Day would also be put in the Parks Brochure.   Mr. Goodrich stated that the final plans for Arbor Day would be completed at next months meeting.

 

Mr. Drobina stated that the Tree Maintenance Report that Mr. Ellis passed out a few meetings ago would be put on the web site.

 

7.   OTHER BUSINESS

 

Mr. Goodrich stated that each member received a copy of the budget for Urban Forestry.

 

Mr. Goodrich stated that the commission received an article on Bay Village and that they use gel packs to water their trees.  Mr. Drobina stated that the city would find out more about gel packs and the cost for the next meeting.  Mr. Malone asked Mr. Ellis how the bag watering system was working.  Mr. Ellis stated that it works great and saves a lot of time. 

 

Mr. Malone stated that the Tree City USA meeting is in Westerville on Friday, April 21 and said three people would need to register for the meeting.

 

Ms. Hurley asked about replacing Ms. Milnor on the Committee.  Mr. Drobina stated he would get with Mrs. Yartin to discuss taking applications for the Tree Commission.   Mr. Drobina stated that he asked at the Service Committee meeting what could be done to honor Ms. Milnor for all her years of service and he was told that a Proclamation could be written for her.

 

     8.    ADJOURNMENT

            Their being nothing further, Mr. Malone moved to adjourn, Ms. Carter seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 5:54 P.M. on March 8, 2006.
