TREE COMMISSION

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12, 2006

 

REGULAR MEETING

5:30 P.M.

 

  1. ROLL CALL.  Mr. Goodrich called the meeting to order at 5:35 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter were present.  Others present:  Ed Drobina, Gregg Ellis, Diana Fuller, BJ from Brickman Group and Mindy Bader from Pickerington North High School.

 

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of March 8, 2006, Regular Meeting.  Ms. Hurley moved to approve; Mr. Malone seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.

 

  1. COMMUNITY COMMENTS.  Mindy Bader, a Pickerington North High School student and BJ from The Brickman Group introduced themselves.  Mr. Goodrich welcomed them to the meeting.

 

  1. REPORTS.   

A.                 Street Tree Report

Mr. Malone asked Mr. Ellis what the figure refers to on the Spring Planting II.  Mr. Ellis stated it is the numbers for marking the places where the trees will be planted.  Mr. Ellis continued that they have finished the Spring Planting I and will be starting the Spring Planting II next week. 

 

     5.    SCHEDULED MATTERS.

                  A.        Tree Preservation Update

Mr. Malone stated that there have been no changes since the last report.

 

      B.        Arboretum.

Mr. Ellis stated he has been pulling weeds.  Ms. Hurley asked whether there were still vandalism issues down there.  Mr. Ellis stated that                          several tree nametags and stakes were broken.  Ms. Carter stated that the park gates are not being locked when they are supposed to be.  Mr. Goodrich asked when the signs could be put back up.  Mr. Ellis stated he would try to get them up by Arbor Day.   He continued that the nametags have to be ordered and it will take time for them to come in.

 

                  C.        Arbor Day

Ms. Hurley stated that she made contact with a cub scout pack who is very excited to do a flag ceremony and a couple of readings for the Arbor Day celebration.  Ms. Hurley stated that it is Cub Scout Pack 51 out of Pickerington Nazarene Church.  Ms. Hurley stated that they rearranged their schedule to make time to do this flag ceremony.

 

 


Mr. Goodrich asked what tree would be planted for Arbor Day. Mr. Ellis stated that it is a Red Horsechestnut tree.  Mr. Goodrich asked if anyone had nominations for the person that it will be dedicated to.  Mr. Malone stated that he thought Mr. Frank Wiseman, former Service Director should be nominated.

 

Mr. Malone made a motion to name Frank Wiseman as this year’s person the Arbor Day tree will be dedicated to.  Ms. Hurley seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.

 

Mr. Goodrich asked when the proclamation would be ready for reading.  Mr. Drobina stated that it would be read at the next council meeting on April 18th. 

 

     6.    COMMUNICATION

 

Ms. Carter stated that a resident on Ramar Drive put gravel in the strip of grass between lanes and is using it as a turnaround.  Mr. Drobina stated that he would take a look at it tomorrow. 

 

7.   OTHER BUSINESS

 

Mr. Malone asked if the registrations for Tree City U.S.A. had been taken care of.  Ms. Fuller stated that they had.

 

Mr. Malone asked about getting T-shirts or golf shirts that say Tree Commission to be able to wear to events.  Mr. Drobina stated that he would check into it.

 

Mr. Drobina stated that the vacant position for Tree Comissioner has just been advertised in the paper. 

 

Mr. Malone questioned the appointment expiration dates for the Tree Commissioner’s on the name and address list.  Mr. Drobina stated he would find out if they could get back to their regular rotation on the expiration dates.

 

Mr. Goodrich asked about using gel packs to water trees.  Mr. Ellis stated that it looked a little expensive.    Mr. Goodrich asked how he schedules watering the new trees that are planted.  Mr. Ellis stated that we send out watering instructions for the homeowners to follow.  Mr. Ellis stated that he drives around and looks to see trees that are looking bad and will water them; also he looks for homes that are vacant and nobody waters the trees.

 

Ms. Carter asked whether the Tree Maintenance Report had been put on the website.  Mr. Drobina stated that it had.

 


     8.    ADJOURNMENT

            Their being nothing further, Mr. Malone moved to adjourn, Ms. Carter seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Hurley, Mr. Malone, and Ms. Carter voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:02 P.M. on April 12, 2006.
