TREE COMMISSION

CITY HALL, 100 LOCKVILLE ROAD

THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2008

REGULAR MEETING

6:00 P.M.

 

  1. ROLL CALL.  Mr. McKinley called the meeting to order at 6:02 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, and Mr. McKinley were present.  Ms. Shelts was absent.  Edward Drobina, Gregg Ellis, Diana Fuller, Carol Carter and Mrs. Goodrich were also present.

 

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of January 9, 2008, Regular Meeting.  Mr. Malone moved to approve; Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.   Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, and Mr. McKinley voted “Aye”.  Motion carried, 3-0.

 

  1. COMMUNITY COMMENTS.  No comments. 

 

  1. REPORTS.   

A.                 Street Tree Report

Mr. Goodrich asked if there was any tree damage from the blizzard.  Mr. Ellis stated he was unaware of any damage.

 

     5.    SCHEDULED MATTERS.

                  A.        Tree Preservation Update

No comments.

 

B.                 Tree Data Base

Mr. Drobina stated that he has entered everything he has into it.  Mr. Goodrich stated if there are any additional reports needed to let him know. 

 

C.                 Arboretum.

Mr. McKinley stated he left a message with the State and with OSU regarding the tree plaques and has not heard anything back yet.

 

D.                 City Beautification Campaign.

Mr. McKinley stated the City Clean-Up Day is scheduled.  Mr. McKinley stated he left a message with the Code Enforcement Officer to see if there is anything we can do help out or to publicize it. 

 

                 E.          Arbor Day.

Mr. McKinley stated he has heard it mentioned that the Arbor Day tree should be dedicated to the Violet Bicentennial.  Mr. Malone stated we should take a vote on it. 

 

Mr. Goodrich made a motion to dedicate the tree for this years Arbor Day Celebration in honor of the Violet Township 200th Anniversary.  Mr. Malone seconded the motion.   Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, and Mr. McKinley voted “Aye”.  Motion carried, 3-0.

 

Mr. Goodrich asked what age tree we normally get for Arbor Day.  Mr. Drobina asked if we get a 2” Red Bud would that be about a 6 to 8 foot tall tree?  Mr. Ellis stated it would be about 5 or 6 feet tall.  Mr. Malone stated that is a decent size tree.  Mr. Ellis stated he would order the Red Bud tree for the Arbor Day celebration.

 

Mr. Goodrich asked if anything had been resolved with which troop would be doing the tree dedication ceremony.  Ms. Carter stated she has calls in to three different troops and is waiting to hear back from them. 

 

Mr. Goodrich stated we should clean up the arboretum before Arbor Day.  Mr. Ellis stated he would clean it up before that time. 

 

Mr. Drobina asked if Mr. Malone would write something up for the newspaper.  Mr. Malone stated he would. 

 

  1. COMMUNICATION.  Mr. Drobina asked if anyone wanted to attend the Tree City USA Awards Ceremony on April 17 in Delaware, Ohio.  Mr. Malone stated that he would attend the ceremony.

 

  1. OTHER BUSINESS.  Mr. Goodrich asked if the city was going to hire a third party to plant trees this year or is Mr. Ellis doing all of it.  Mr. Ellis stated the city would be doing the planting this spring. 

 

    8.     ADJOURNMENT

            Their being nothing further, Mr. Goodrich moved to adjourn, Mr. Malone seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, and Mr. McKinley voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 3-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:13 P.M. on March 13, 2008.
