REGULAR MEETING
7:30 P.M.
1. ROLL CALL. Mr. Frazier called the meeting to order at 7:33 P.M. Roll call was taken with Mr. Frazier, Ms. Green, Mr. Boetcher, Ms. Hammond and Mr. Pawlowski present. Others present were: Steve Carr, Tricia Sanders, and Mr. Latorre from Sun Times.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF February 25, 2008, Regular
Meeting. Ms. Green moved to approve; Mr.
Boetcher seconded the motion. Mr. Frazier, Ms. Green, Mr. Boetcher, Ms. Hammond and Mr. Pawlowski
voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 5-0.
3. COMMUNITY COMMENTS. Mayor Mitch O’Brien stated he came down to thank everyone for their service and volunteering to be on the Parks Board and how much it is appreciated. Mayor O’Brien stated the volunteer Pickerington projects have really taken off and there have been many volunteers helping to clean up Pickerington. Ms. Sanders stated that she has heard wonderful things about the Pickerington Clean Up day. Ms. Sanders stated she had students out there volunteering and they had a great time and got a lot done and she was very impressed at how well it went.
4. PARK DEVELOPMENT / IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS.
A. Swim Club Purchase – Mr. Carr stated as of this date the city has sold 196 pool memberships in all categories most of them falling in the category of family memberships. Mr. Carr stated including the 40 passes sold in the fall by the previous owners we are probably over 240 now. Mr. Carr stated that we could be very close to 300 because the pace is really picking up and could be on our way to a 600 sale.
B. Simsbury Disc Golf Course – Mr. Carr reported there are a lot of problems with the land that was not known – building debris, concrete, basically it was used as a dump site so they are having to clean up as they go along so the project is not progressing as fast as he wants it to. The good news is that the designer’s services are free of charge. Mr. Pawlowski asked what was the projected opening day. Mr. Carr stated they are still shooting for the May 31st date although all 18 holes may not be completed.
C. Victory Park Playground Improvements – Mr. Carr stated Paul Lane, from the Building Department, would help design the landscaping for the Victory Park Playground improvement. Construction on that is slated for after the Violet Festival.
D. Community Gardens – Mr. Carr stated Paul Lane is also designing the Community Gardens. The location chosen is at Shawnee Crossing and the area is east of Sycamore Creek which is very tree lined along the creek, highly visible from 256, and there is already a place to bring cars across. The initial design will probably have a parking lot for about 12 cars. Mr. Carr stated that this project should be ready to go by spring of next year.
5. RECREATION AND EVENTS. Mr. Carr reported there are 41 teams participating in the softball program that started last Friday. Sign-ups have been very busy for spring and summer activities. Mr. Carr stated the city is under a hiring freeze and Khrista Tuttle has left the City of Pickerington to take a fulltime job with the Federal Government and will not be replaced. Mr. Carr stated that an employee in the Park Maintenance Division that will be off work for the next 60 days so the rest of us have to take up the slack.
6. JOINT PARK DISTRICT DISCUSSION. Mr. Carr stated the Township held a meeting last Wednesday to discuss the pros and cons of the Joint Park District and he was out of town on vacation so was unable to attend. Mr. Carr stated that he has nothing to report about that meeting. Ms. Sanders stated they will be meeting once a month and that she will be able to attend the meeting next month. Mr. Pawlowski stated that his impression is that they are not ready to commit to any joint meetings without first gauging the interest amongst the non-residents.
7. OTHER BUSINESS. Mr. Carr stated the 4th Monday in May happens to be Memorial Day. Traditionally this Board has not met in the month of May but you are also at liberty to reschedule that meeting if you wish.
Ms. Hammond made a motion to cancel the Park Boards meeting in May because of the Memorial Day Holiday; Mr. Boetcher seconded the motion. Mr. Frazier, Ms. Green, Ms. Hammond, Mr. Boetcher and Mr. Pawlowski voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 5-0.
8. ADJOURNMENT. There being nothing further, Ms. Green moved to adjourn; Ms. Hammond seconded the motion. Mr. Frazier, Ms. Green, Ms. Hammond, Mr. Boetcher and Mr. Pawlowski voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 5-0. The Parks and Recreation Board meeting adjourned at 8:25 P.M., April 28, 2008.
