TREE COMMISSION

REGULAR MEETING

6:00 P.M.

 

  1. ROLL CALL.  Mr. McKinley called the meeting to order at 6:05 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Ms. Shelts, Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Carter, Mr. McKinley and Mr. Malone were present.  Edward Drobina, Gregg Ellis, and Angie Perrine were also present.

 

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of June 12, 2008, Regular Meeting.  Mr. Goodrich  moved to approve; Mr. Malone seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, Ms. Shelts, Ms. Carter and Mr. McKinley voted “Aye”.  Motion carried, 5-0.

 

  1. COMMUNITY COMMENTS.  No comments. 

 

  1. REPORTS.   

A.                 Street Tree Report

Mr. Goodrich asked if several dead trees in the Stonebridge subdivision were taken care of.  Mr. Ellis stated if it is in regards to the large tree in the entrance of the subdivision, then yes.  He also stated that is was already chipped.  

 

     5.    SCHEDULED MATTERS.

                  A.        Tree Preservation Update

No comments.

 

B.                 Tree Data Base

No comments. 

 

C.                 Arboretum.

Mr. McKinley asked how the Arboretum held up with the storms and flooding that the city has had over the past few weeks.  Mr.  Ellis replied the arboretum held up pretty good.  Ms. Carter asked about the flowers.  Mr. Ellis said some on the corner of the path are trampled but overall they look fine. 

 

D.                 City Beautification Campaign.

Mr. McKinley stated that this is the month for the Violet Township Beautification campaign.  Once they post the results Mr. McKinley said he will contact them and see how there turn out was.  Also, see if they have any suggestions for the city next year and if they want to be involved as well.      

 

  1. COMMUNICATION.  Mr. Drobina mentioned that Ms. Carter had asked last month about the dead tree limbs from neighbor’s trees.  He asked the city Code Enforcement Officer, Danny Mahaffey and he responded back “whoever owns the property where the dead tree limbs fall, that is the person who is responsible for disposal of it.”  Also he stated, “The property owner is allowed to trim any braches that are on the there property.”   But, also to be sure the owner knows there property lines.

 

  1. OTHER BUSINESS.  Mr. McKinley said it has been brought to his attention, that the City of Pickerington Finance Committee is reviewing the position of the City Arborist for budget purposes.   Mr. McKinley stated he would like to set up an official vote to let this committee know that the Tree Commission is in support of the City Arborist position.

 

After discussion, Mr. Goodrich made a motion that the Tree Commission is in support of the City Arborist position; Ms. Carter seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, Ms. Carter, Mr. McKinley and Ms. Shelts voted “Aye”.  Motion carried, 5-0.

 

Mr. McKinley asked the question if the city had ever done a recycle program for Christmas trees.  And do you think there would be any use for it?  Mr. Drobina asked what exactly did he mean?  Mr. McKinley stated drop off your used Christmas trees and the city would chip them up and use the wood chippings for mulch around the city.  Mr. Drobina asked Mr. Ellis if the wood chippings would be any good to use in the city.  Mr. Ellis replied we would have to let it age for six months.  Mr. McKinley stated maybe the city might want to look into this.   

 

     8.     ADJOURNMENT

            Their being nothing further, Mr. Goodrich moved to adjourn, Mr. Malone seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Mr. Malone, Ms. Shelts, Ms. Carter, and Mr. McKinley voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 5-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:28 P.M. on July 10, 2008.
