TREE COMMISSION
CITY HALL, 100
LOCKVILLE ROAD
THURSDAY, DECEMBER
11, 2008
REGULAR MEETING
6:00 P.M.
A. Street Tree Report
Mr. McKinley asked Mr. Drobina if the city would be responsible for the trees at the new schools. Mr. Drobina replied that would be the school district responsibility.
Mr. Malone asked Mr. Drobina if he knew where the log jams were located according to September’s tree report. Mr. Drobina replied there was several log jams going down the stream. The city went down and cleared them out and we have a drawing of where they were located. Mr. Malone questioned if these sites are going to be problems in the future. Mr. Drobina stated most of the log jams had been in the stream for quite a while. There was one particular large log that the city had to hire a company to remove. All other logs were removed by the City Arborist Gregg Ellis and another city employee. But, the City Manager has stated this is something that needs to be checked on because it is the city’s stormwater that runs into that stream.
Mr. McKinley questioned how up to date was the tree storm damage report from September, the trees that have “to be removed” after them. Mr. Drobina replied he would have to guess that they have been already removed since this report was done back in September.
Mr. Drobina stated that the city would be receiving money back from FEMA in regards to the storm. This money would be for the labor hours worked and the use of the equipment.
Mr. Malone asked where the city is at in regards to fall tree planting. Mr. Drobina replied Gregg Ellis has been planting the trees throughout the city. Ms. Shelts questioned who is responsible for the trees with the new Diley Road project. Mr. Drobina stated there is no landscaping with this project. This is something that will have to come after the fact, and so far there are no funds allocated for the landscaping. Mr. Malone questioned if ODOT can help with this. Mr. Drobina replied he didn’t know everyone’s budgets have been tightened. Mr. McKinley asked if the Ohio fund could come up with some money. Mr. Malone stated maybe with the bike trail funding.
5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
A. Tree Preservation Update
Mr. Malone stated he recently went through Sycamore Creek and other new subdivisions and none of these that we thought we would need to protect look like they need it. Maybe with construction slowing down this has something to do with it.
B. Tree Data Base
Mr. McKinley asked Mr. Drobina how the data base is coming along. Mr. Drobina replied that he has had some trouble with it because it is in WinZip and the city doesn’t have this software only in evaluation form. He has talked to the city’s software technician about possibly purchasing this software and is waiting on a price back from him.
C. Arboretum. No comments.
Mr. Drobina stated that Ms. Carter had called him and stated that she could not attend tonights meeting. But wanted him to ask about the tree commission meeting with the Parks committee a couple times this spring so that everyone is on the same page, we know what they are planning and the same for them. Mr. McKinley stated he thought this would be a good idea.
Mr. McKinley commented that we need to be thinking about Arbor Day for the next meeting and bring some ideas with them.
Mr. McKinley reminded that next meeting will be on January 8th at 6:00 p.m. and they would have to elected new officials at this meeting, and also discuss if they wanted to keep the meetings at the same time next year.
8. ADJOURNMENT.
Their being nothing further, Mr. McKinley moved to adjourn, Mr. Malone seconded the motion. Ms. Shelts voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 3-0. The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:20 P.M. on December 11, 2008.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED:
