CITY OF PICKERINGTON
TREE COMMISSION
CITY HALL, 100
LOCKVILLE ROAD
MONDAY, MARCH 23,
2009
REGULAR MEETING
6:30 P.M.
Mr. Goodrich asked if the Arborist, Mr. Ellis has placed an order yet for spring trees. Mr. Drobina stated that Mr. Ellis has ordered 32 trees for spring planting and has also ordered the Arbor Day tree as well. Ms. Carter questioned that she didn’t see very many removals on the report. Mr. Drobina responded that Mr. Ellis has been pruning a lot of trees this past month. Mr. McKinley asked how we are with the budget and will we be able to plant trees for the Diley Road project. Mr. Drobina explained that the city has two parts to the tree budget. One for subdivisions, which the trees have to go into the subdivisions and the other part, is for street trees. So we could but we have to wait until fall after the contractor is finished.
5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
a. Tree Preservation Update.
Mr. Drobina stated that the database is up to date. Every tree that Mr. Ellis has ever planted or removed is in the database. Mr. Goodrich asked if the database needed any changes done. Ms. Carter stated that the database couldn’t isolate every ash tree it had to be by the exact name of the ash tree. Mr. Goodrich stated he would have to take a look at the database and see what he could do. Mr. Drobina stated this would be helpful because the city is trying to get a grant to remove part of the ash trees in the city.
Ms. Carter stated it would be nice to get together and clean up the flower beds before Arbor Day. Mr. Goodrich asked if we have a date set up to do this. Ms. Carter replied that Saturday, April 18th sounded good. Mr. Drobina stated he would have to get some mulch for the flower beds. Ms. Carter commented that she has been looking on websites for different kind of plaques. She explained that she found a rubber type of plaque that would fit over the existing posts and possibly be more durable against vandalism. She would do some more checking on the prices. Mr. Drobina replied that Angie Perrine could also help do some research on this.
Mr. McKinley stated he had left a message to find out if the committee has decided on when or if a day has been decided yet. He has not received a reply back.
Ms. Carter stated that she contacted Brian Charles from the Boy Scouts and they would love to do the ceremony. The boy scouts will be in charge of the flag ceremony. Mr. Goodrich stated he would contact them to see if they needed anymore information about the ceremony.
Ms. Carter commented that she had contacted the Pickerington Magazine to see about an article covering Arbor Day in the magazine. The magazine is only being published two times a year now due to financial reasons and this will not work out for us.
Ms. Carter asked the question if they needed to do volunteer assignments for the ceremony set up starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24th. Ms. Carter also stated that they should send an email to City Council members to invite them to attend the ceremony.
In regards to
the tree dedication we need to decide on who, remarked Ms. Carter. Mr. Goodrich stated that they had earlier
talked about Diane Fuller and would be a great choice. Mr. Malone replied he agreed on Diane, she
has been a big help to the committee. After discussion, Mr. Malone moved to honor
Diane Fuller with the tree dedication ceremony.
Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.
Ms. Carter, Mr. McKinley, Mr. Malone and Mr. Goodrich voted
“Aye”. Motion carried, 4-0. Mr.
Malone asked Mr. Drobina
what tree Mr. Ellis had ordered for the tree ceremony. Mr. Drobina replied
he couldn’t remember the exact name of the tree. But would e-mail everyone this
information. Mr. Malone stated he would
do the talk about the tree for the ceremony.
Mr. McKinley stated that the Chairman makes the opening comments. Mr. Goodrich stated he would do the talk
about Diane and why she was picked. Mr. Drobina stated he would contact the Mayor’s Administrative
Assistant and make sure she has the date and also the Proclamation needs to be
done as well. Mr. Malone asked about a
newspaper article and Mr. Drobina replied he would
take care of this.
7. OTHER BUSINESS. Guest, Mr. Pawlowski of the Parks & Recreation Committee introduced himself. Mr. Pawlowski commented that from the Tree Committee’s December meeting minutes, it was brought up by Mr. Drobina and Ms. Carter about having some joint spring meetings between the Parks & Recreation Committee and the Tree Committee, since they both have common interest within the City. Mr. Pawlowski offered to be the liaison between the two committees. Ms. Carter thanked him for attending the meeting and for volunteering to do this. After some discussions it was agreed that these two committees could be a great resource to each other in the future and could possibly work on some projects together.
Mr. Malone asked if anyone was planning on attending the Tree City USA Awards Ceremony on April 16, 2009. Mr. Drobina commented that Angie Perrine could take care of the registration for anyone who would like to attend. Mr. Malone replied that he would be attending this ceremony.
8. ADJOURNMENT.
Their being nothing further, Mr. Malone moved to adjourn, Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion. Mr. McKinley, Ms. Carter, Mr. Malone and Mr. Goodrich voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 4-0. The Tree Commission adjourned at 7:05 P.M. on March 23, 2009.
