5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
A. Tree Preservation Update
Mr. Wiseman stated he will continue to monitor the development occurring on Long Rd.
B. Arboretum.
Mr. Wiseman stated that spring would be the best time to have the dedication for the Arboretum. He stated that the flowers would be nicely bloomed and we would have time to have a plaque prepared and do a nice presentation. Ms. Cleary stated that coordinating the dedication with our Arbor Day celebration would be nice depending on how much we get completed down there. Ms. Cleary asked what plans were going on at the Arboretum right now. Mr. Ellis stated he has a list of trees ordered for the fall and we should receive them in a couple of weeks. Ms. Milnor suggested that the trees that have a lot of color in the spring or in the fall be put close to the bridge. Ms. Cleary asked about the labels for the trees and Mr. Ellis stated they had all
been ordered. Ms. Cleary asked if Keller Farms had planted flowers on the park side of the covered bridge. Mr. Wiseman stated that they haven’t done that yet. He continued that we are coordinating with Keller Farms to move some dirt for them first.
Mr. Wiseman stated he would like to see something done with the steps that are corroding on the park side of the bridge. Mr. Wiseman stated that would need to come out of the Parks budget and he will talk with Mr. Carr about putting that in his budget for next year. Ms. Cleary stated that the Parks Department and other members of the city should be informed of what the Tree Commission is doing. Mr. Wiseman stated that we are in the budget process right now and he is scheduled to talk with both Ms. Bushman and Mr. Carr about those issues.
Mr. Sabatino suggested going down to the Arboretum to see exactly what needs to be done so everything would be ready for the dedication. Mr. Wiseman suggested going down at next months Tree Commission meeting. He continued that we would move the Tree Commission meeting back to 5:00 PM and meet down at the Arboretum until 5:30 and then go back up to City Hall for the remainder of the meeting.
Ms. Cleary suggested mulching the trees and asked whether Mr. Ellis had time for that. Mr. Wiseman stated that he would look at trying to get Mr. Ellis help to do that.
Mr. Wiseman stated that regarding the street trees that are going to be planted in subdivisions, that contract went through 2nd reading at the last council and it will have the final reading at the next council meeting. The contractor should be planning about mid-November when he can begin planting about 485 trees.
6. COMMUNICATION
A. Tree Brochure
Mr. Wiseman stated that there were some very good ideas brought up for the tree brochure but he hasn’t had time to get with the public information officer to get it put on paper. He stated by next meeting he will try to have that available so changes can be made.
Ms. Cleary stated that when the tree brochure is finalized they would like to get about 250 copies made available to local nurseries and at City Hall. She stated that it will tell what trees are not good to plant, what to do if you want a tree, and what the resident’s and the city’s responsibility would be. She stated there will also be a small section on the Arboretum.
B. Web Site
Mr. Wiseman stated that the tree brochure will be put on the website once it is completed. Mr. Sabatino suggested putting some pictures of the Arboretum on the website as well.
7. OTHER BUSINESS
Mr. Sabatino stated he was informed that Courtland Lane has never had any street trees put on it. Mr. Ellis stated he didn’t think there was very much right-of-way on that street to put trees in. Mr. Wiseman said he would check and see if that area is viable.
Ms. Milnor stated she has been sick and unable to attend all the meetings. She stated that she would try to get to all the meetings unless the Commission members would rather she resign. Mr. Sabatino stated that as long as Ms. Milnor is willing to attend she is more than welcome to stay. Everyone agreed she should not resign.
8. ADJOURNMENT
There being nothing further, Mr. Sabatino moved to adjourn; Ms. Cleary seconded the motion. Mr. Sabatino, Ms. Cleary, Ms. Milnor and Ms. Hurley voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 4-0. The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:00 P.M. on October 8, 2003.
