REGULAR MEETING
5:30 P.M.
3. COMMUNITY COMMENTS. Mr. Malone described the purpose of the Tree
Commission to the students and explained the selection process of members.
4. REPORTS.
A. Street Tree Report
Mr. Wiseman stated that they used the stump grinder to dig the holes for trees to be planted and it worked very well. He continued that they have added a stump grinder into the budget for next year.
5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
A. Tree Preservation Update
Mr. Malone stated that he had an opportunity to check on progress work at some of the newer subdivisions, particularly Villages of Sycamore Creek. He stated that there are still some stands of trees in areas and was not sure how much was supposed to remain. He stated he spoke with the Planning & Zoning Director and with the Building Inspector and is scheduled to meet with them next Tuesday at 9:00 AM on-site and look at the plans to see how much we may be able to preserve. He stated that was one of the subdivisions approved prior to the Tree Commission being involved in the preservation of the trees. Mr. Wiseman stated he will try to meet with them next Tuesday.
Mr. Malone stated that the other subdivisions on Long Road are still protecting the tree areas along the stream.
B. Arboretum.
Mr. Malone stated that at their walk through at 5:00 P.M. today there were a lot of good suggestions. Mr. Wiseman said some of the suggestions made were to put in tiered steps going up to the covered bridge and terraces going down the back and also birdhouses were suggested. He also stated discussion was made of what type of stone they might want to use for the steps. Mr. Wiseman stated that flowers and bushes will be planted. Mr. Sabatino asked if the landscape improvements would be completed prior to the Arbor Day dedication. Mr. Wiseman stated that it would. Ms. Cleary stated that the mulching around the trees looks really good and the front area as you descend off the bridge looks well taken care of and would be a good place for the dedication ceremony next year. Ms. Cleary stated a decision would need to be made on whether to keep the name of the Arboretum as Sycamore Creek or make a change.
6. COMMUNICATION
A. Tree Brochure
Mr. Wiseman passed out a draft of the tree brochure and several suggestions were made. Ms. Cleary stated that Mr. Wiseman might want to ask Mr. Carr about when the new park signs are coming in and that at one time there was discussion of putting the Arboretum’s name on the park sign.
Mr. Sabatino asked about the donation program for dedicating a tree listed on the tree brochure. He asked if any of the information about it is listed on the web site. Mr. Wiseman stated that after the tree brochure is finalized the complete brochure will be put on the web site. Mr. Sabatino asked how the process of dedicating a tree works. Ms. Milnor stated that it would be on a case by case basis because the cost would depend on which type of tree the person wanted. Ms. Hurley stated she felt the trees should be categorized on the brochure to enable to public to see where their money is being spent. Mr. Wiseman stated that it should work as an application process where the person makes the request to dedicate a tree, fills out an application and the Tree Commission approves it. Mr. Malone stated that the request for tree donations happens very infrequently and he agreed with Frank’s suggestion to bring the request for dedicating a tree to the Tree Commission for suggestions on the type of tree to be planted.
Ms. Cleary stated that the brochure says “Street Trees Not Recommended” and should say “Trees Not Recommended”. Ms. Cleary stated that the portion that talks about how to get street trees and the responsibilities of the residents and the city should be put in the brochure. Ms. Hurley stated that the web site address should also be listed on the brochure. She also suggested making the brochure a more conventional size so it’s easier to handle. Mr. Wiseman stated that we could try use tri-fold size. He stated the only problem might be that all the information would not fit.
B. Web Site
Mr. Wiseman restated that the tree brochure will be put on the web site when it is finalized.
7. OTHER BUSINESS
No other business.
