TREE COMMISSION

REGULAR MEETING

6:30 P.M.

 

 

  1. ROLL CALL  Mr. Goodrich called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Mr. Malone, Mr. Goodrich and Ms. Shelts.  Mr. McKinley was not present until after meeting started.  Mr. Vega was absent.  City Manager Mr. Vance, Councilwoman Mrs. Hammond, Service Director Mr. Drobina, Recreation Administrator Mrs. Medinger, Mrs. Carter, and Service Department Administrative Assistant Ms. Perrine were also present.   

 

2.   APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF January 26, 2011.  Mr. Malone moved to approve;          Ms. Shelts seconded the motion.  Mr. Malone, Ms. Shelts and Mr.Goodrich voted    “Yes”.  Motion passed 3-0.               

              

  1. COMMUNITY COMMENTS            No comments.

 

      4.   REPORT

           

             A.          Street Tree Report (Mr. Drobina)     Mr. Malone asked when Mr. Drobina would

                           be proceeding with the tree trimming quote.  Mr. Drobina referred him to the

                           attached quote that stated how much it would cost to trim all the trees in the

                           city.  The quote is for more than we have budgeted so we thought we would

                           pick out some subdivisions that need it the most and do now and save some

                           money back for the fall.  Mr. Goodrich asked what areas Mr. Drobina was

                           thinking about. Mr. Drobina commented he thought about Sycamore Creek and

                           Melrose because it has the most mature trees at this time.   After some more

                           discussions,  Mr. McKinley moved to approve to direct the Service Director

                           to go ahead and contract pruning in the Melrose and Sycamore Creek

                           Subdivisions and come back later on in the year for further

                           recommendations.  Mr. Malone seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms.

                           Shelts, Mr. Malone and Mr. McKinley voted “Yes”.  Motion passed 4-0.

                           Mr. Goodrich asked if the city would be sending out letters to the residents in

                           the two subdivisions.  Mr. Vance replied that they do have to notify the public

                           and that they would maybe place a story in the newspaper and also on the 

                           website.  Mr. Drobina stated that this would also be brought up at the next

                           council meeting.                                                                          

 

             B.           Public Safety and Community Affairs Report (Mr. Drobina)      No Comments.

                              

 5.    SCHEDULED MATTERS

 

             A.           Tree Preservation Update.      No Comments.

 

             B.           Arboretum Improvements.     Mr. Vance thought they should come up with

                            2011 goals for the Arboretum.  The commission agreed with Mr. Vance.

 

             C.           2011 Arbor Day Action Plan.     Mr. Vance stated he would like to start with

                            the location of Arbor Day.  He would like to see this event at different locations

                            every year. Mrs. Medinger stated that we have been in contact with Pickerington

                            Elementary School the third grade classes doing an essay contest.  Mr. Drobina

                            and myself would go into the schools and do a discussion about Arbor Day and

                            try to get the students involved.  Give out certificates to the first, second and

                            third place winners.  Ms. Shelts asked if the awards would be given out at the

                            Arbor Day Celebration.  Mrs. Medinger replied, yes.  Mr. Vance commented

                            that we would also have some refreshments.   Ms. Shelts stated that the

                            Pickerington Community Choir would like to perform and she also had the boy

                            scout troop lined up.  Some more discussions went on regarding the location for

                            the event. The commission agreed to keep the Arbor Day Celebration at the

                            Arboretum.  Mrs. Hammond asked if we could get signs at the entrances of the

                            park letting people know where the Arboretum is located.  Mr. Vance

                            commented that he felt that was a realistic thing they could do.  The

                            commission also agreed to have the celebration start at 10:30 a.m.on April 16th.         

                           

            D.            2011 Beautification project proposals and goals.  Mr. Drobina commented that

                            that the hanging flower baskets have been ordered.  Mr. Malone asked how the

                            town meeting went.  Mr. Drobina stated he felt everyone thought it was a good

                            idea and didn’t here anything else.  Mr. Malone stated he asked because he

                            thought that was going to be discussed at the meeting.   Mr. Vance commented

                            that everything he has heard has been positive regarding the baskets. 

 

            E.             Tree Maintenance.         Noted previously discussed.  

                                                                                                                               

  1. COMMISSION ANNOUNCEMENTS AND FUTURE AGENDA RECOMMENDATIONS 

             Mr.Goodrich stated that we have a resignation from Mr.Vega from the Tree Commission.

            Mr. McKinley stated that he would like to add to the future agenda the entrances to the

            city and some of the neighborhood flower beds whose is responsible for them.  Is the VIP

            program going to do something with that or the local associations. Mr. Vance replied that

            we could have discussions on this next meeting.    Mr. Malone commented that Tree City

            USA awards ceremony will be in Granville on April 21st with registration starting at 8:00

            a.m.  Mr. Drobina stated that more information will be sent out in March.   

                                                                                                                    

7.   ADJOURNMENT     There being nothing further, Mr. Goodrich moved to adjourn, Mr. Malone seconded the motion  Ms. Shelts, Mr. Malone Mr. McKinley and Mr. Goodrich voted “Yes”.  Motion passed 4-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 7:10 p.m. on February 23, 2011
