CITY OF
PICKERINGTON
TREE COMMISSION
CITY HALL, 100
LOCKVILLE ROAD
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY
14, 2004
REGULAR MEETING
5:30 P.M.
3. COMMUNITY COMMENTS. Mr. Malone described the purpose of the Tree
Commission to the students and explained the selection process of members.
4. REPORTS.
A. Street Tree Report
Mr. Ellis stated that Pickens Tree Farm has finished the Fall planting of 485 trees and everything looks good. Mr. Ellis stated that he has planted 10 trees at the Arboretum. Mr. Sabatino asked why the tree was removed from the downtown city parking lot? Mr. Ellis stated that streetlights were put up and the tree was split so it was safer to take the tree down.
Mr. Malone stated that tree lawns are defined as the green space between the sidewalk and the street. The size of the green space is narrow in some areas and wider in others and there have been inquiries about having wider tree lawns or planting the trees behind the sidewalk. Mr. Sabatino mentioned right-of-way problems and having new developments make the tree lawn size wider. Mr. Wiseman introduced Mr. Drobina, Assistant Service Director, and suggested he talk with Lance Schultz about potential problems with widening the tree lawn size and/or the possibility of setting those requirements.
5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
A. Tree Preservation Update
Mr. Malone stated that he left a message with Richard Brahm about meeting to discuss questions about some of the trees that are still out in Villages of Sycamore Creek, the Diley tract, and Preston Trails to see if the trees are going to be saved and, if so, what we can do to make sure that it is done appropriately.
B. Arboretum.
Mr. Ellis stated that someone cut down a White Spruce probably to use as a Christmas tree. Mr. Ellis stated that it would cost about $80.00 to replace the tree that was taken. Ms. Cleary stated that there is a reward set up for anyone reporting someone for vandalizing the Arboretum and park areas.
6. COMMUNICATION
A. Tree Brochure
Mr. Wiseman stated that he does have the brochure set up in the tri-fold form but needs to fill in the center of the brochure with information. Mr. Wiseman stated that he would try to have that ready for the next meeting.
B. Web Site
Mr. Wiseman stated that the tree brochure will be put on the web site when it is finalized.
7. OTHER BUSINESS
Mr. Sabatino stated that there would no longer be council representatives for Parks and Recreation or the Tree Commission. Mr. Wiseman explained that the council members already attend several meetings and this would lighten the load for them. Ms. Cleary asked if this would take effect immediately and Mr. Wiseman stated that it might have to be changed by Ordinance first. Mr. Sabatino asked what needed to be done for the Tree Commission to request a new member. Mr. Wiseman stated that once there is a vacancy on the Commission it would automatically be filled by an applicant.
Ms. Cleary asked if setting the Tree Commission meeting day and time for 2004 could wait until the next meeting. Mr. Wiseman stated he would check with Lynda Yartin, but did not think it would be a problem.
8. ADJOURNMENT
There being nothing further, Mr. Sabatino moved to adjourn; Ms. Cleary seconded the motion. Mr. Malone, Mr. Sabatino, and Ms. Cleary voted “Aye.” Motion carried, 3-0. The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:20 P.M. on January 14, 2004.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED:
