TREE COMMISSION

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2004

 

REGULAR MEETING

5:30 P.M.

 

  1. ROLL CALL.  Ms. Hurley called the meeting to order at 5:35 P.M., with roll call as follows:  Ms. Cleary, Ms. Hurley and Mr. Goodrich were present; Ms. Milnor and Mr. Malone were absent.  Mr. Malone arrived later at 6:00 P.M.  Others present:  Ed Drobina, Gregg Ellis, Diana Fuller, and Pickerington North High School students Patrick Bukalski, Heather Goertemiller and Jamie Hughes.

 

2.   APPROVAL OF MINUTES of July 13, 2004, Regular Meeting.  Ms. Cleary moved to approve; Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.  Ms. Cleary, Ms. Hurley and Mr. Goodrich voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 3-0.

 

3.   COMMUNITY COMMENTS.  Ms. Hurley explained the purpose of the Tree         Commission to the students.  Ms. Hurley welcomed Mr. Goodrich, the new Tree Commission Member, to the Tree Commission. 

 

      4.   REPORTS.   

A.                 Street Tree Report

Mr. Ellis reported that he listed in the report trees that would be planted this November and that there are three new species of street trees being ordered.  Ms. Hurley asked how it is decided where the trees are being planted.  Mr. Ellis stated that they would all be planted in new subdivisions.  Ms. Hurley asked how bagworms are removed from trees and Mr. Ellis stated the only way to get rid of them is to remove them by hand.

 

5.   SCHEDULED MATTERS.

A.        Tree Preservation Update

Mr. Malone stated that he has not received anything back from his memo regarding the Diley Rd. widening project.  Mr. Drobina stated that he would check with Mr. Wiseman and get back to him. Mr. Malone stated there is a requirement within the city code that major arterials have to have certain types of landscaping.  Mr. Malone continued that they required this of all the subdivisions as well as the commercial developments.  Mr. Malone stated as of this date he has not seen any plans that show any details of the landscaping.

 

Mr. Malone stated that there are no other tree issues in the subdivisions that he is aware of.  

 

     


B.        Arboretum.

Mr. Drobina stated that he met with a representative of Keller Farms and explained how they wanted the design done and was given a quote for laying railroad ties, flagstone steps, lay sod and remove the concrete block for $3,436.00.  Mr. Drobina stated that the Tree Commission needs to make a recommendation to go forward and then the matter will be referred to the Service Committee.  

 

Ms. Hurley made a motion to move forward on the installation of the landscaping and grading on the Arboretum by the covered bridge in the amount of $3,436.00.  Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Cleary, and Ms. Hurley voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 3-0.

 

Ms. Cleary asked if anything had been decided about the sign.   Mr. Drobina stated that it was discussed but he hasn’t moved forward with it yet.  Ms. Cleary asked if Keller Farms was told about the possibility of putting in a wildflower bed.  Mr. Drobina said that it was mentioned and he was told it would be best to install that towards the back and a variety of different things could be done from very inexpensive to very expensive.  Mr. Drobina stated that for budget purposes for next year he also got a quote for the cost of maintenance for the beds at the Arboretum and was told it would be approximately $4,650.00.  He stated that would be for pulling weeds and putting mulch in.  It would not include fertilizing.

 

Mr. Goodyear made a motion to put forth to the Service Committee a plan for maintaining the beds at the Arboretum for 2005 in the amount of 4,650.00.  Ms. Cleary seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Cleary, and Ms. Hurley voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 3-0.

 

 

6.   COMMUNICATION

           A.   Tree Brochure

Ms. Hurley explained to the high school students the purpose of the tree brochure.  Mr. Drobina stated that the tree brochure is complete other than getting Mr. Goodrich’s name added to it.  Mr. Drobina asked what quantity they wanted printed.  Ms. Cleary stated that they wanted to leave several at the different nurseries around town and also have some available at City Hall and at the Service Department.  Mr. Drobina stated that he got prices per 1,000 for a cost of $440.00 from Office Solutions in town.

 

Ms. Cleary made a motion to order 1,000 copies of the brochure from Office Solutions at a cost of $440.  Ms. Hurley seconded the motion.  Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Cleary, Ms. Hurley and Mr. Malone voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.

 

                 B.   Web Site

Mr. Drobina stated that the tree brochure would be put on the web site when it is finalized. 

 

7.   OTHER BUSINESS

Mr. Malone stated anyone interested in attending either of the two conferences that are coming up need to sign up.

 

      8.   ADJOURNMENT

There being nothing further, Mr. Malone moved to adjourn; Mr. Goodrich seconded the motion.  Mr. Malone, Mr. Goodrich, Ms. Cleary, and Ms. Hurley voted “Aye.”  Motion carried, 4-0.  The Tree Commission adjourned at 6:12 P.M. on September 8, 2004.
