3. COMMUNITY COMMENTS. Mr. Malone explained the purpose of the Tree Commission to the students.
4. REPORTS.
A. Street Tree Report
Mr. Malone asked why 5 Spruce trees were planted at a Hereford Drive residence. Mr. Ellis explained that the residence sits right across from the Service Department and the trees were planted to block the view of the building.
Mr. Malone asked how Mr. Ellis’ CEU credits were coming along. Mr. Ellis stated that he should be pretty close.
5. SCHEDULED MATTERS.
A. Tree Preservation Update
Mr. Malone stated that the development just to the north of the Exxon Station was originally slated to preserve all the trees around the back between the houses and also along the stream. Mr. Malone continued that since that time they’ve been slowly whittling away at several of those areas. Mr. Malone spoke with the contractors and they had been instructed to leave all the big trees and work around there and remove some of the smaller ones to get in. Mr. Malone stated that there was possible damage to trees from digging all around them and piling dirt around them and smothering the roots. Mr. Malone asked Mr. Ellis if anyone had approached him about this and asked his input? Mr. Ellis stated that he marked all of them got their sizes and what will probably happen is he will go back to the developer and they will have to replace the trees that die. Mr. Malone asked Mr. Ellis if he had heard from Mr. Schultz or anyone else that this had been brought about because of some change in development or some other activity. Mr. Ellis stated that Mr. Schultz didn’t know the extent of the changes.
Mr. Malone stated that the contractor he spoke with stated that they had been approached about putting in a berm to help shield houses in the back but will require 6 to 8 foot of mounding of dirt in between the trees which may cause more damage. Mr. Ellis stated he would get with Mr. Schultz to see what is going on.
B. Arboretum.
Mr. Drobina stated that Keller Farms have not started yet on the work because of rain. Mr. Drobina continued that he spoke with Keller Farms and they stated they would still get the work completed this fall that would include the grading and tiered steps. Mr. Drobina stated that he provided them with different types of signage for the arboretum so they can decide what they want. The Commission decided on the signage they wanted and Mr. Drobina stated he would check and see whether that signage has the option of locking the doors.
6. COMMUNICATION
A. Tree Brochure
Mr. Drobina stated that the tree brochure was approved and when a purchase order number is assigned we will have the brochure copied.
B. Web Site
Mr. Drobina stated that the tree brochure is in the process of being put on the web site.
7. OTHER BUSINESS
Ms. Hurley stated that she would be unable to attend the December 8, 2004 Tree Commission meeting. Ms. Cleary stated that she also could not attend that meeting. Mr. Malone stated that means there would not be a quorum so there will be no meeting on December 8, 2004 and the next meeting date for the Tree Commission would be January 12, 2005.
Mr. Malone asked if Mr. Drobina would need any budget feedback information before the 1st of the year. Mr. Drobina stated he would let Mr. Wiseman know that they would be available to answer any budget questions he may have.
