CITY TAX FACTS

Did you know:

  • Your mailing address, which merely designates the post office that process your mail, or your school district does not always reflect the City taxing jurisdiction in which you live.  Not sure where you actually live?  Check the street list under the Community tab to verify City residency or call the tax office at 837-4116.
  • Pickerington Local School District income tax (SD2307) is a separate tax from the Pickerington City income tax and is collected by the State of Ohio and cannot be used as a credit on the City tax return.  A school tax form SD100 must be filed with the State annually and school tax withholding is claimed on that form.
  • Social Security benefits, pension income, welfare payments, State unemployment, Workers Compensation, interest and dividends are not subject to City tax.
  • The filing deadline for calendar year taxpayers is April 15th.  All extension requests must be submitted on or before this date.
  • If you do not have City of Pickerington tax withheld from your earnings, you must file a declaration of estimated tax and remit quarterly installments totaling that estimate.
  • You are not liable for tax if you are under 18 years of age and if your employer withheld tax from your wages, you are eligible for a refund.
  • All residents 18 years and older, must file an annual tax return for all or any part of a year.
  • All married couples should file jointly with the City, as you are on one account in our records.  How you file Federally does not impact your City return.
  • W2 forms and all applicable Federal Schedules must be included with City returns to provide audit capabilities.  Credits or refunds cannot be issued without documentation.
  • You will receive credit of 1/2% (.005) against our 1% (.01) tax on any of your wages that are taxed by another city and not refunded.  W2 forms or a city return showing tax paid to another city must be included to receive the credit.  You do not get credit for the tax you paid to another city.  Credit calculation example:  $50,000 income X .005 = $250 credit
  • If you receive a refund of any or all the tax you paid to another city, an amended Pickerington  return must be filed to pay back the 1/2%  credit, if taken originally.
  • Self-employment income, net income from rentals, tips, commissions, etc., are taxable to the City as earned income.  If you have rental property or other business income, you must file, even if you show a loss.

ESTIMATED TAX INFORMATION

REQUIREMENT: According to Pickerington Codified Ordinance Section 882.08(d), those residents who do not have City of Pickerington tax withheld from their wages and expect to have a tax liability of $50 or more, must pay an estimate. Partial year residents need to estimate on their partial year income.

QUARTERLY PAYMENTS: Quarterly payments on the estimated amount are due April 15, July 15, October 15, and December 15. Payment vouchers are included with the yearly tax return. Remittance may be made without a voucher by including the account number or Social Security number, name, and address.

SAFE HARBOR: The estimated amount must be equal to 100% of the previous full year's tax liability or 90% of the current year's tax liability to avoid insufficient estimate penalties.

PENALTY: If an estimated amount is required and not paid, the taxpayer may be subject to a non-compliance fee of $25, penalty charge of 10% of balance, and interest charge of 1.5% of balance per month from due date.

AMENDMENT: Estimates may be amended at this time by indicating the new estimate amount in the "amended estimate" box provided. After subtracting previous payments from the revised estimate amount, the remainder must be remitted by the December due date.

ASSISTANCE: For help in preparing an estimate or for questions concerning the City of Pickerington's Income Tax liability, please call the City's Income Tax office at 837-4116 during business hours.

RETURNED CHECKS POLICY

All checks received by the City which are returned due to insufficient funds or closed accounts will have a $30.00 charge attached for administrative handling, in addition to any bank fees charged to the City.
